Ozarks 2008: Epilogue

Epilogue: The Flower Watering Debacle

We haven't taken a vacation in the summer for a long time, so we have rarely had to worry about our flowers or plants. However, for this trip, we figured that our entire flower garden and our tomatoes would die if we didn't water them for two whole weeks in June and July. So, rather than shutting off the water main like we usually do, we arranged with a neighbor to water everything periodically.

When we got back into cell phone range atop Mt. Nebo, Ken went to check his voicemail, expecting to hear back from his insurance agent about some business insurance. Instead, there were five or six voicemails from neighbors, in varying stages of panic, with the key phrase being something like "there is water running out of your garage!"

You can imagine what the rest of the afternoon was like, as we made various phone calls to neighbors and relatives, trying to figure out what was going on. Fortunately, by the time we worked through all of the voicemails and phone calls, Julie's Aunt Maryellen had already been to the house and was able to tell us that everything was OK. Phew.

We're not exactly sure what happened, but as near as we can figure, a hose got left on in back of the house, and water ran down the foundation and came out the garage. It also got onto the floor in the back of the basement, but fortunately that part of the house is unfinished and everything is off the floor. All that really got damaged were some empty cardboard boxes. So, all's well that ends well.

Of course, between this and The Day of the Squirrel, we're beginning to get a little paranoid about leaving our house for more than a week at a time. :)
